1. Bruce’s Discovery Garden

This week we named our school garden after a very special individual who belonged to our school community. All three of Bruce’s grandchildren attended LMCS with one grandson, Wyatt, still here in grade 5.  Bruce Van Garderen volunteered his time at Maples Discovery Garden Co Op at the top of 200th and for years our students have gone up to the gardens to learn all about plants and gardening from Bruce. Bruce was a very kind and caring man who inspired everyone around him to want to garden! He even had the grade seven’s digging in the dirt and that’s hard to do! Our hope when we built the LMCS garden last year was that Bruce would be able to come and teach our kids right in our very own school garden but unfortunately Bruce got sick last year and passed away from cancer. We invited Bruce’s family and colleagues from Maples Discovery Garden to a special school assembly on Tuesday where we unveiled our new garden sign in his memory. We will dearly miss Bruce’s excitement and knowledge about plants but as a school we will continue his legacy of teaching children the importance and joy of growing a garden.

2. Breakfast Club

Each morning we host breakfast in the library for any LMCS student. It is a great way for kids to start their day with a nutritious breakfast and good friends. The program is all run by parent and community volunteers and I am extremely grateful for their time and dedication. Various items are served such as pancakes, oatmeal, cheese toast, eggs, smoothies, yoghurt and fruit, and more! There is always sliced fruit and juice. There are donation envelopes in the office if you feel that this is a place you would like to contribute financially or if you would like to help out and volunteer, that is welcome as well. It has almost been a year that we have been hosting breakfast and I must say, it is my favorite part of the day :O)

3. Remembrance Day Assembly

It is so important for us to honour soldiers on this special day and to remind our youth about war and how devastating it is. To discuss with them the sacrifices many people made on our behalf so that we could live peacefully in our beautiful country.  Students from Mrs. S-K’s and Mrs. Jackson’s classes read poems, Mrs. Cunningham’s class wrote postcards for peace, Mrs. Driver’s students shared writing around “Why We Remember”, Mrs. Watkin’s students shared feelings of war and Mrs. Randa’s class recited “In Flanders Fields. Thank you for all of the family members who came to honour the veterans with us at the assembly.
