Math Measurements

Mrs. Osborne’s class was busy estimating the weight of objects in grams this week and then recording the actual weight. The knowledge they gained from weighing certain items allowed them to make educated estimates. They worked in groups using scales to determine which items would be heavier. Hands on math fun!

It was an exciting week in Mrs. Boyce’s class. They participated in a cultural presentation by Krystal from the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation of Alert Bay. She was born and raised in Surrey. Krystal was taught to make button blankets by her grandmother, Liz Dawson. Using a wooden clothes peg, felt, and sequins, Krystal showed the children how to make a tiny doll wearing a miniature “Button Blanket”.

They also had their first family visit for the Roots of Empathy program. As they follow baby Brooklyn’s development this year, the focus will be to “foster the development of empathy, resulting in more respectful and caring relationships and reducing levels of bullying and aggression.” In this lesson, they learned how Brooklyn communicates and builds trust with her mother, Amanda.
