2. Langley Centennial Museum

On Tuesday, November 24th, Division 13 went on a field trip to the Langley Centennial Museum to participate in a Pioneer Christmas. Christmas traditions of long ago were brought to life and the children experienced some typical pioneer gifts, a Christmas stocking, baking gingerbread cookies, and making popcorn tree decorations.

4. Reading Link Challenge

Reading Link Challenge (RLC) is an award-winning public library/school partnership program that promotes the “sport of reading.” Librarians from FVRL work with school librarians and teachers to recruit teams of six students in grades 4 and 5. The program is run as a series of quiz/trivia challenges with questions based on six preselected books. All teams participate in one or more levels of challenge, with the winning teams advancing to higher levels of competition within the community. At FVRL, the levels of challenge are as follows:

  1. School Challenge – All teams challenge other teams in their school.
  2. Library Challenge – School winning teams challenge each other at an FVRL location.
  3. Community Challenge – FVRL Library Challenge winning teams challenge each other.
  4. Grand Challenge – Winning teams from FVRL, Coquitlam, North Vancouver City, Port Moody and Surrey Library systems challenge each other to determine an overall winning team.

Participants learn about teamwork and how to read for retention. RLC also promotes public library usage and encourages children to develop a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure.

We are super excited to have a bunch of our grade 4 and 5 students participating this year. They have their first book to read and they are getting ready for the first challenge!

Some of our students went out to get us a school tree and it is beautiful. Thank you to Country Noble Farms for discounting the tree again for us this year. Thank you to Pete for all his help showing our kids around.
