1. Aluminum Foil Art

Janet Crockford, one of the school district Aboriginal Presenters, spent time in a few of the primary classrooms this week discussing the importance of animals to the Aboriginal people in BC.  She also demonstrated how they showed respect to animals by using every part of the animal possible and by returning any unused parts to the earth in a respectful manner. Janet discussed how the different parts of the animal were used, such as using hides for clothing, bones and antlers for tools, games, jewelry, trading, etc. Students then participated in making an Aboriginal foil art project of a modified ovoid and u-shaped design. The art turned out lovely.

2. Kilometer Club

This week the LMCS annual kilometer club returned! Over a three week period students can participate in kilometer club if they choose and collect popsicle sticks for each lap they run, with three laps making a kilometer. Each class keeps track of the students progress and by the end of the three weeks the kids run amazing distances! Students who finish a full marathon are awarded with a special t-shirt!

3. Speech Festival

This week we hosted our school Speech Festival event on Monday with students from many of the grades participating. Students first read their speeches in front of their grade group and judges chose 3-5 students they felt had the best overall speech and presentation. Josiah, Mason, Chloe, Kaelyn, Neha, Maddison, Reese, Savannah, Macie, Paige, Penelope, Kyra and Dylan then presented their speeches in the gym and judges chose two students from each category to represent LMCS at the district level. Friday Mason, Neha, Penelope and Savannah went to the school board office to compete against students from across the district. They all did amazing and I am so proud of their efforts. An extra big congratulations to Neha for bringing home a 1st place for the primary category!

4. Woo Woo

The Owl lady came to visit the grade 4 students bringing some special visitors with her. The kids were introduced to different varieties of owls and learned all about each species. They even got to pet them!

5. Buddy Book Making

Mrs. Driver and Mrs. Rhoddam/O’Keefe’s class worked together as buddies using the app book creator to create books about their favorite things in Kindergarten.

6. Sun Hang Do

This week our students spent two days with Sun Hang Do instructors teaching them about this martial art. They were able to participate in the physical teachings but also listen to the instructors talk about the key values of morals, ethics and voluntary service that this martial art believes in. It was a great experience for all. Thank you to Mrs. Erickson and Mr. Raphael for arranging this experience for our school

7. City Councillors

Halleigh and Sawyer from Mrs. Cunningham’s class were chosen to act as councillors and were asked  to decide whether Langley needed more trails or play areas….hmm difficult decision!
