Construction Begins!
Construction on our new outdoor space started Tuesday! Fences went up, excavators arrived and digging and sawing began! So exciting.
Plastic Straw Devastation
Ms. Randa’s grade 5 students collected the plastic straws from each classroom at LM’s for a one week period and here is what they discovered:
Straws collected – 298 from all but two divisions, (whose bags went MIA!)
The students did a little math using 300 as an estimate (probably on the low side) to calculate the amount our school would throw out on average per week, month and year, if we continued this trend.
1200 per month!
12,000 per year!
Then the students used these numbers to estimate how many juice box straws would be thrown out in the 31 elementary schools in the Langley District. Ms. Randa’s class calculated that there could be as much as 372,000 straws thrown into the garbage in our district elementary schools.
Ms. Randa’s students went to each class and shared their results and suggested some different ways to reduce the use of straws. The students purpose is to create some awareness to the problem of using straws that are not able to be recycled and the consequences of these actions. (Straws entering the waterways and oceans, causing harm to the environment and animals.)
get-green-now.com is a good website to give you some information about this!
The students will be repeating this exercise in a few weeks, in each classroom, to see if there has been a reduction in juice box/ straw consumption!
It would be great if you at home could also encourage alternate ways to bring drinks to school.
Disney Spirit Day
So many mouse ears! Today the happiest place on earth moved to LMCS!
